The Ace of Spades Campaign - Take a Chance On Me part 3

The Opening Rounds
After a good night's rest, Kimberley, Celeste, Gwendoline and Jeanette returned to the Casino Triomphe late in the afternoon for the evening's quarter finals of the high stakes poker competition. Kimberley was relaxed and full of confidence. She'd seen who the other three players were who would be playing against her and she feared none of them.
She and the other three players, Blue Bollu, a Gormelite, "Black Jack" LeGrange and Shesull, a Lashunta, lined up with the casino manager, James Eliot Brubaker, for a photo shoot and to answer questions from the press. Blue Bollu was polite but distant; "Black Jack" LeGrange came across as arrogant and boastful and Shesull was very taciturn and only answered questions in short monosyllabic sentences. However, Kimberley was cheerful and chatty. When asked how she coped with insults, intimidation or lewd suggestions, she replied, "I just ignore them. They don't put me off my game. When I'm playing my concentration is wholly on the game. Nothing else matters."
And when asked if she thought she could win, she replied confidently, "Of course I do. Why else would I be here?"
Turn 1
Twenty minutes later, the players gathered next to their computer console. Although card games were still very popular in the 26th Century, the management decided to install computer consoles for their high stakes games as it was much harder to cheat an AI.
When two or more players wish to make an action which may be opposed by another, this is called an Opposed Check, which is usually made up of an Attribute plus a Skill. In this case the players would be using the Charisma Attribute plus the Gambling, Card Games or Poker skill. Whoever rolls highest wins that round. LUC dice could be used to boost a player's chance by adding dice to an Attribute on a 1:1 ratio, which in this case would be CHA. Also LUC dice could explode. This meant that any 6 rolled could be rolled again and the results added together. Further rolls of 6 would allow another roll. In theory, there was no limit to how high you could go as long as you continued rolling 6's. There was one Exploit that some players had which was called Cheat. It allowed a player to re-roll any 1's but the second result must stand. Finally, any character with an appropriate hook could use it in any non-combat situation to gain the benefit of exploding 6's just like a LUC die but which could be used every turn!
Kimberley had CHA:3d6 plus Gambling 3d6, giving her 6d6. She had LUC:5d6 and the hook, enjoys gambling.
Blue Bollu had CHA:3d6 plus Gambling 3d6, giving him 6d6. He had LUC:2d6 and the Cheat exploit.
"Black Jack" LeGrange had CHA:2d6 plus Poker 4d6 giving him 6d6. He had LUC:3d6 and the Cheat exploit.
Shesull had CHA:4d6 plus Card Games:2d6 giving her 6d6. She had LUC:3d6 and the Cheat exploit.
So the field appeared equal with everyone rolling 6d6. For the first of the five turns the results were as follows -
Blue Bollu rolled 6+6+5+4+4+3=28
"Black Jack LeGrange  rolled 5+4+4+2+2+{1}(+4)=21 (note numbers in {} are ignored).
Kimberley rolled 6+(6+3)+5+4+4+3+2=33
Shesull rolled 6+5+5+3+{1}(+4)+{1}(+1)=24
Kimberley was the clear winner with Blue Bollu second, Shesull third and "Black Jack" LeGrange came last. It was a good start for Kimberley. During the first two rounds no one would be eliminated but at the end of the third, the rules changed.
Turn 2
The results for this turn were as follows -
Blue Bollu rolled 6+4+3+2+2+{1}(+3)=20. He had a running total of 48.
"Black Jack" Le Grange rolled 5+4+3+2+{1}(+5)+{1}(+1)=21. He had a running total of 42.
Kimberley rolled 6+(2)+5+5+4+2+1=25. She had a running total of 58.
Shesull rolled 6+6+5+3+3+{1}(+4)=27. She had a running total of 51.
In a much more closer fought turn, Shesull just beat Kimberley for first player. And with a margin of just 1, "Black Jack" pipped Blue Bollu into third place. The first two turns were just preliminary games. In Turn 3 the stakes were raised as one player would be eliminated. Kimberley was certain it wouldn't be her.
Turn 3
In this Turn whoever scored the lowest would be eliminated. In the event of a draw they would compare their running totals (including the score for this round) and the player with the lowest running total would be eliminated. In this turn, the primary objective was not to come last.
In this turn the results were as follows -
Blue Bollu rolled 6+5+4+3+{1}(+5)+{1}(+6)=29. This gave him a running total of 77.
"Black Jack" LeGrange rolled 6+6+4+3+3+{1}(+4)=26. This gave him a running total of 68.
Kimberley rolled 6+(5)+6+(1)+5+3+3+1=30. This gave her a running total of 88.
Shesull rolled 5+5+5+4+4+2=25. This gave her a running total of 76.
Despite having a higher running total than "Black Jack" LeGrange, Shesull was placed last in this Turn as she rolled lowest this round and thus she was eliminated from the game. She left without complaint with her head held high. Kimberley felt some sympathy for her. She was hoping "Black Jack" would be the first to go. Still, she had come first in two of the three rounds, placing her as clear favourite to win this match.
Turn 4
Tensions ran high between the three players. First and second place would go through to the match final, leaving the person in third place out of the game.
Blue Bollu rolled 6+6+6+4+4+3+4=33. Note that numbers in red denote the use of a LUC die. In this Turn everyone spent one LUC die. He had a running total of 110.
"Black Jack" LeGrange rolled 6+4+4+3+3+2+5=27. He now had a running total of 95.
Kimberley rolled 5+5+5+4+3+1+4=27. She now had a running total of 115.
Blue Bollu was the clear winner but Kimberley and "Black Jack" had tied, so their running totals were compared and Kimberley easily beat "Black Jack" with a margin of 20 points. He left his computer console swearing and mumbling under his breath.
"Bad loser," Blue Bollu said, shaking his head in disgust.
"Most definitely," Kimberley agreed.
Turn 5 - The Final
With Blue Bollu winning the last round, the odds had shifted slightly in his favour. It would be a closely fought battle of skill and wits.

Blue Bollu rolled 6+5+5+4+4+3+3=31. His running total ended on 141.
Kimberley rolled 6+(4)+6+(4)+3+2+1+3+4=33. Her running total ended on 148. If she hadn't spent two LUC dice she would have lost.
Kimberley was ecstatic at winning. She couldn't stop smiling. As Blue Bollu left the stage he turned to Kimberley and acknowledged, "You were a worthy winner, Miss Wells. My congratulations."
"Thank you, Bollu," Kimberley replied, "I really enjoyed playing against you. You were both a worthy opponent and a true gentleman."
Gwendoline rushed onto the stage and gave Kimberley a huge loving hug which Kimberley reciprocated.
"I never doubted you could do it, Kim," she said smiling happily.
Celeste and Jeanette followed Gwendoline on to the stage at a more leisurely pace. Jeanette shook Kimberley's hand and said, "Well done."
Celeste simply nodded at Kimberley.
Casino manager, James Eliot Brubaker quickly joined them on stage. He smiled warmly at Kimberley and shook her hand.
"Many congratulations, Miss Wells," he said, "You're through to the semi-finals and as such I'd like to present you with this cred-stick worth 25MCr. Enjoy your victory."
"Oh, I certainly will." Kimberley replied with a huge beaming smile.
Kimberley won for three reasons. First she rolled higher than anyone else. Obviously. Secondly, the reason she rolled higher was that everyone else had the Cheat exploit, which allowed them to re-roll 1s but this meant the most they could score was a 6. Kimberley however, had her Hook advantage. If any of her rolls of 6 exploded, the worst she could score would be a 7 (6+1). So her worst roll still beat the cheat's best roll. Thirdly, she had more LUC dice than anyone else in this game. Blue Bollu only had 2 LUC dice and spent one each in the semi-final and final. Kimberley had 5 LUC dice and spent 1 in the semi final. She spent 2 in the final but could have just as easily spent 4.

The Ace of Spades Campaign - Take a Chance On Me part 2

Arrival on Alhambra
The Ace of Spades docked at the main space station orbiting Golden 4 (Alhambra). Although it had planetary landing capability, the starport for the capital city, New Xanadu, had a restriction that only allowed ships of Class III or less to land on planet. The Ace of Spades was a Class IV scout ship. Fortunately, it had a shuttle craft, The Jack of Spades, which was allowed on planet.
Captain Kimberley Wells piloted the shuttle with great skill and was guided by ground control to a free landing berth. With her were her bodyguard, Celeste, an android assassin; Kimberley's best friend, Nurse Gwendoline Papillion, and Gunnery Officer Jeanette Grey who expressed an interest in the gambling competition that Kimberley was about to take part in. This was a lie. As an undercover BRINT agent her real motive was to keep an eye on Celeste, whom BRINT believed was a Forerunner Android. Also on board the shuttle were scouts and lesbian lovers, Danica the Venetian and Katja Sondquist. They wanted to go shopping for lingerie. Finally, were bounty hunter, Julia Frostorm and cat burglar, Rebecca Ellington. Rebecca was trying to persuade Julia to take her on as her partner when she went bounty hunting. Julia could see pros and cons with such a partnership but for now agreed to allow the young burglar to accompany her. Julia also had a shopping list but hers was distinctly combat orientated.
Upon clearing customs control, the eight crew members split up into three groups. Danica and Katja immediately set off for the shops. Julia and Rebecca checked in at the IPA offices so that Julia could confirm her bounty hunting credentials whilst on planet and to check out the wanted posters. Kimberley, Celeste, Gwendoline and Jeanette took a taxi to the Casino Triomphe, the location of the gambling contest that Kimberley was about to participate in.
Casino Triomphe had a reputation as one of the higher class and more successful casinos in New Xanadu. It was also very expensive to stay at with the cheapest rooms costing 1,000 credits per person per day. Kimberley and her three friends accompanying her had secured accommodation at the Nu Hilton Hotel, not far away, for half the prices of the Casino Triomphe. The competition was due to start on the next day but first, Kimberley had to register with the organisers. She had already forwarded a communication to them to confirm her intention to participate.
As Kimberley led her three companions towards the registration desk, a friendly male voice from the bar shouted out.
"Hey, Kimberley, it's great to see you again. How ya doing?"
Kimberley smiled as she recognised the voice and her eyes roved up and down his body, lingering longest over his sparkling brown eyes and his huge grin.
"Emerich!" Kimberley smiled warmly. "I might have known you'd be here."
"Let me buy you guys a drink and catch up on recent events," Emerich offered.
"Sure. Why not?" Kimberley replied as she took a stool next to Emerich. "Emerich, you know Gwendy here. This is Jeanette Grey, our Gunnery Officer and the droid is Celeste, my personal bodyguard. Word of warning - don't mess with her."
"Hi, folks. I'm Emerich Rach. Kimberley and I are good friends and we go back quite a few years. Just like Kimberley, I'm a pilot, smuggler and gambler, so we move in similar circles. This gentleman sitting next to me is Karl Bergman. He's a mercenary and my personal bodyguard. After one particularly close shave with The Organisation, I felt it'd be prudent to hire a bodyguard."
"Yeah, we've also had our fair share of run-ins with The Organisation," Kimberley acknowledged. "I understand they have a big presence here."
"Sure, they do," Emerich confirmed, "But not so much here on New Xanadu. From what I've been able to ascertain is that Casino Triomphe is 100% legit. Its reputation is solid."
"Well, that's reassuring," Jeanette said in a neutral tone.
Kimberley looked at her quizzically, unsure if she was being sincere or sarcastic.
Jeanette's face remained impassive and she took a long sip from her orange juice, purposely avoiding eye contact.
"So I heard about what happened to Buck and the rest of your old crew," Emerich said reverentially. "They didn't deserve to die like that. My deepest condolences to you and Gwendoline."
"Thank you, Emerich," Kimberley bowed her head, focussing her eyesight on the remains of her drink. It was a struggle to keep the tears from flowing freely. "It was truly horrific. I miss them all so badly. Did you know that Buck and I were going to get married once we made planet-fall after that mission?"
"Yeah, I heard. I'm so sorry."
"We were so good together. It was because of all our gambling winnings that I was able to get the new Ace of Spades built and hire a new crew. Gwendy and Kyran were my first recruits. Shelagh left to enjoy a life of motherhood. She's happily married now."
"I'm pleased for her. If there is anything I can do for you just let me know. Anything!"
"I appreciate that, Emerich. What we do know is that the attack was made by a group called the Turbo Sharks. But since then, they have just disappeared. I know, space is a big place and they could be anywhere but if ever you get a sniff of them, let me know."
"That's a promise, darling."
The conversation switched to the upcoming contest with Emerich telling Kimberley about who else were going to be taking part. There would be 32 players playing in eight groups of four. The winner of each round would advance to the next round and receive a cash prize. For the first round, the prize would be 25,000 credits (25 Mega Credits, abbreviated to 25MCr). For the semi-finals, the prize increased to 50MCr. For the final, everyone would receive a cash prize. Fourth place would receive 75MCr, third place 100MCr, second place, 200MCr and the winner, a huge 500MCr. However, because this was such a prestigious contest, each participant had to pay a 100MCr ante just to take part, thus ensuring only the best of the best would participate. Between them, Emerich and Kimberley knew or had heard of nine other players. By far, the favourite to win was the formidable Halmia Katura, a woman who had developed a reputation as a gambling legend.
An hour later, Kimberley bid Emerich goodbye and good luck and set off to finalise her registration details and pay her entrance fee. Her confidence was sky high.

The Ace of Spades Campaign - Take a Chance On Me part 1

Introduction
I promised that the next scenario in this campaign would involve the crew of The Ace of Spades going to a pleasure planet for some rest and recreation. That is exactly what will happen. I do apologise for making you wait so long for part 3 of the campaign. When you have so many projects on the go at once it really is hard to find the time to do lengthy batreps, which of all the stuff I do are the most time-consuming to do. But, here we are and personally, I can't wait to see what happens next for Kimberley and co. The scenario takes place on Golden 4 (Alhambra) in the Byte starsector. The main story of this chapter, which was written by me, focuses on Captain Kimberley Wells and is a showcase for her gambling prowess when she participates in a high-stakes gambling competition. There will also be a secondary story that brings other crew members into conflict with The Organisation, a galaxy-wide criminal empire. It was only a matter of time before the crew tangled them. Strap yourselves in and get ready for another roller-coaster ride of action and adventure.
Alhambra
The Alhambra Pleasure Planet is known for hundreds of parsecs as a vacation spot without equal. Originally, the world was lifeless. Its weather was pleasant and its oceans were beautiful... but the atmosphere was pre-Terrestrial, with no oxygen. The empty planet was purchased by a consortium of entertainment corporations. Thanks to their efforts, Alhambra is now lively enough for even the most jaded tastes. The giant pressurised pleasure domes of New Xanadu provide a wide variety of both decadent and family amusements. The low gravity makes an impressive range of challenging yet relatively safe "outdoor" sports possible as well. Regular shuttles from the Planet's two starports takes visitors to several orbiting stations - or one of Alhambra's three natural moons - for even more exotic entertainments.
In addition to its regular features, Alhambra is the site of several annual or semi-regular festivals and conventions, including the week-long annual "Mother Earth Reunion" convention at which visitors of Terran descent honour their Terrestrial roots with games, banquets and other festivities.
Only about 4 million of Alhambra's population are permanent inhabitants. The rest are guests. Their number ranges from 5-6 million during the off season to 20 million or more during Earth Reunion. Alhambra is not cheap. Even those visiting the least expensive domes can expect to spend an average 500 credits per person per day, not counting transit costs to and from the planet. The higher class amusement centres can run into many thousands of credits or even a million credits plus per day per guest, especially the high-stakes gambling casinos and the exclusive resort called Sybaros on the opposite side of the world from the "public" domes. It is here that The Organisation is most prominent, working behind the scenes, controlling many establishments.
Expensive though it is, Alhambra has never wanted for visitors since it opened its domes to pleasure-seekers. Even during wartime, Alhambra has never closed its domes - indeed, it is then that it has been most in demand as an R&R spot. A long term terraforming project is in progress on Alhambra; within a few hundred years, it may be possible to tear the domes down and walk free on a garden world. Exciting place, Alhambra!

Ghostbreakers Ghostmobile

The Ghostbreakers from New York as presented in the N.O.W. supplement, Spirits of Manhattan use a disused Range Rover Popemobile as their Ghostmobile. Of course, if you're running your own franchise, rather than using the core team from the supplement you can use any vehicle that has a large enough capacity to carry your average evil nasty plus four man team, such as a transit van, pick-up, SUV, ambulance, hearse or camper van. As part of the franchise deal you will be supplied with the necessary anti-plasm plating that can be used to set up a containment area that keeps the spooks corporeal, just like the original Ghostmobile.
I don't know of any company who makes a 28-32mm Popemobile, However, Crooked Dice Games do make an excellent vehicle for their Paranormal Exterminators, which they have named PX1. Note that I have painted the official Ghostbreakers logo on the bonnet/hood of the vehicle, and yes, that was painted freehand. I'm very happy with the outcome. 😊
It is clearly based on the ECTO-1 Ghostmobile from the Ghostbusters series of films but fits in perfectly for this alternative version of the setting.
I have only just noticed that I haven't painted the registration plate yet. Oops! I'll rectify that as soon as possible. I'll probably stick with the CDG name and call it PX-1.
My 28mm scale figure of Vampifan has been included to give you a sense of scale. It is quite a long vehicle.
The vehicle is cast in resin, as are the equipment rack on the roof, the flashing roof lights and the wing mirrors, which are incredibly brittle. I replaced mine with a small piece of thin card stuck atop a short length of a paper clip. The wheels are made of metal.
The model costs £20.00 from the Crooked Dice Games webstore. I plan on using mine as a replacement for the team's Popemobile. It is a great model.

15 Additional Careers for W.O.I.N.

One of the things I love about running my WOIN blog is getting to interact with the authors of some of the rulebooks and supplements. A few days ago I was contacted by Micah Dickey asking if I'd review his new supplement, 15 Additional Careers for WOIN? I, of course, said, yes. He sent me a free PDF copy of his work and I was very impressed with it.
What he has done is create 5 new careers for each of the main WOIN systems, each supporting a wide variety of exploits and play styles ranging from roleplaying, to combat, to utility.
The OLD careers are Gigamancer, School of Light and Dark, Constructology, Hunter and Trapper.
The NOW careers are Samurai, Vagrant, Shadow Strider, Powerlifter and Freerunner.
The NEW careers are Gadgeteer, Politician, Zephyr, Trickshot and Treasure Hunter.
These are all useful in one way or another. The Trapper and Trickshot comes with rules for creating traps and offers a wide range of sample traps. It might seem odd to find the Samurai in the NOW contemporary period and not the fantasy setting of OLD but when you read about him, it makes sense. The career I found most useful was the Politician. Sure, there's a Politician career in NOW but I wanted one for my The Ace of Spades Campaign. What I particularly like about these 15 new careers is that they all come with lots of exploits for you to choose from.
I only have one minor criticism of this supplement and that is for the Politician. It lists its pre-requisite as Medicine skill, which makes no sense to me. Why not Administration or Bureaucracy?
Anyway, I can highly recommend this supplement. At the moment it is only available to buy as a PDF file from DriveThruRPG for just £2.30 or $2.99. Here's the link for it - https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/257990/WOIN-15-Careers-for-WOIN?term=WOIN+
